From 1 April 2016, local authorities in England are legally obliged to maintain a list of people and groups interested in building their own home. Local councils in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland may follow suit in due course.

Once the Housing and Planning Bill gets Royal Assent in 2016, the law will then be clarified about how local authorities have to provide plots of land suitable for custom and self build.
